Introduction
Neglected tropical mycoses represent a group of chronic fungal infections, including Mycetoma, Chromoblastomycosis, and Sporotrichosis. These diseases predominantly impact impoverished populations residing in tropical and subtropical regions, particularly those who lack adequate access to healthcare and sanitation. The progression of these mycoses is typically slow, often leading to significant morbidity and social stigma for affected individuals. Despite the considerable challenges these diseases pose, they remain largely overlooked by public health systems and receive minimal research funding compared to other infectious diseases.
Status in Global Health
Although some deep mycoses have been included in the World Health Organization's list of neglected tropical diseases, a substantial gap persists in epidemiological data, disease surveillance, and the implementation of dedicated control programs across most affected countries. The lack of comprehensive data and targeted interventions has hindered efforts to effectively address and reduce the burden of these diseases.
The Need for Action
To mitigate the impact of neglected tropical mycoses, it is vital to increase awareness, enhance disease mapping efforts, and invest in improved diagnostic and treatment strategies. These measures are essential for reducing the burden of these under-recognized diseases and addressing the needs of the populations most at risk.
Our Commitment at AMDRC AIIMS Bhubaneswar
At AMDRC AIIMS Bhubaneswar, we are deeply committed to addressing the challenges posed by neglected tropical mycoses. We actively support free identification and susceptibility testing of organisms responsible for these infections. In pursuit of our mission, we regularly publish our findings in peer-reviewed journals and make data available on our website. It is pertinent to note that there is paucity of data on antifungal susceptibility of agents of chromoblastomycosis. Below, we present the susceptibility data of agents causing Chromoblastomycosis performed as per CLSI M38 A3 with end point reading taken between 2-6 days(time required for growth) that have been received at our center over the past few years.
